Understanding Your Roofing Insurance Claim

Filing a Roof Damage Claim Does Not Have to Be Stressful

When a storm damages your roof, the last thing you want to deal with is a confusing insurance process. Unfortunately, many homeowners feel overwhelmed by the claims process and end up accepting less coverage than they deserve, or they delay filing altogether and let damage worsen. Understanding how the process works from start to finish puts you in control and helps ensure your home gets the repair or replacement it needs. Here is what every DFW homeowner should know about filing a roofing insurance claim.

Step 1: Document the Damage Immediately

As soon as it is safe to do so after a storm, document any visible damage to your roof and property. Take photos and videos from multiple angles, capturing damaged shingles, dented gutters, broken flashing, and any debris on or around your roof. If there is interior damage such as water stains on ceilings or walls, document that as well. This evidence is critical for supporting your claim and establishing a timeline of when the damage occurred. Avoid making permanent repairs before your adjuster visits, but you can and should take temporary measures to prevent further damage, such as covering exposed areas with a tarp.

Step 2: Contact Your Insurance Company Promptly

Most homeowner’s insurance policies require you to report damage within a reasonable timeframe. Contact your insurance company as soon as possible to initiate the claim. When you call, have your policy number ready and be prepared to describe the damage in general terms. The insurance company will assign an adjuster to inspect your roof, typically within one to two weeks depending on demand. In the DFW area, adjusters can be especially busy after widespread storm events, so filing early helps you get into the queue sooner.

Step 3: Get a Professional Roofing Inspection

Before or alongside the adjuster’s visit, schedule an inspection with a reputable local roofing contractor. An experienced roofer can identify damage that may not be obvious to an untrained eye, including subtle hail impacts, lifted shingle edges, and compromised underlayment. At Guardian Ridge Roofing, we provide free storm damage inspections and detailed reports that document every area of concern. Having your own professional assessment gives you valuable leverage during the claims process and helps ensure nothing is overlooked.

Step 4: Meet with the Adjuster and Review the Estimate

When the insurance adjuster arrives, it is helpful to have your roofing contractor present for the inspection. Your contractor can walk the roof with the adjuster and point out damage that might otherwise be missed. After the inspection, the insurance company will provide an estimate for the repair or replacement. Review this estimate carefully and compare it to the assessment from your roofing contractor. If the insurance estimate seems low or does not account for all the damage, you have the right to request a re-inspection or file a supplement with additional documentation.
